As per statistics published by the Affairs of Municipal Solid Waste, Urban India is generating 0.15 million tons of Municipal Waste per day that adds upto 62 million tons of Urban waste per year. As per studies carried on by the Government Organizations the volume of waste is projected to reach 165 million tons by 2031 and 436 million tons by 2050. As per the statistics published only 68% of the waste gets collected by the Municipal Corporations of which only 28% gets treated. Thus only 19% of the total waste generated in the country is treated and more than 80% gets disposed off in unscientific manners at dumpsites. These 80% of the generated waste is the creating a major concern for the Government as if left untreated it directly affects the ecology disturbing the environmental balance in form of Air, water and soil pollution.

Solid waste management (SWM) is a major problem for many urban local bodies in India, where urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have resulted in increased municipal solid waste (MSW) generation per person. Effective SWM is a major challenge in cities with high population density. Achieving sustainable development within a country experiencing rapid population growth and improvements in living standards is made more difficult in India because it is a diverse country.

Despite significant development in social, economic and environmental areas, SWM systems in India have remained relatively backward. There is an urgent need to move to more sustainable SWM, and this requires new and advanced waste management facilities. Current SWM systems are inefficient, with waste having a negative impact on public health, the environment and the economy.
